Danny Sundell
I grew up in Idaho surrounded by artists with mother, father, and all siblings engaging in the visual arts. Dad was in the Forest Service and weekends were often spent in the outdoors leading to a lifelong interest in nature and landscapes. I had great art instruction in high school which led to me receiving a fine arts scholarship though my degree is in landscape architecture. I’ve had a long career as a landscape architect eventually settling in the Buffalo, New York area. In 2015, my wife JoAnne and I took a surprise turn and opened Dark Forest Chocolate in Lancaster, New York – the regions only small-batch chocolate manufacturer. However, in recent years I’ve returned to my interest in the arts.
Though I love visual arts of many types, I choose to paint in a somewhat traditional, realistic manner. I work mostly in oils because I like the idea of the paint being simply ground pigment and natural oils, the same as artist have been using for hundreds of years. And I find the process of painting engrossing. I lose track of time while I struggle to make something of a messy and loose start. It is my hope that my work will help other see familiar settings with a heightened level of awareness and appreciation as it has for me. I love just walking and looking at patterns of light, keeping an eye out for objects that might make a nice still life.
