February 2025 Newsletter

Hello friends!

We hope that you enjoyed our last meeting and the discussion regarding art shows. We have compiled an overview of the discussion below, rather than a typical newsletter, as there is little to report at this time of year. This will serve as reference for anyone who needs it. If you have further questions or just want to chat about shows, please see the post on Facebook in the ACG Hangout group (join if you haven't!) which will be pinned for awhile. We can all learn from each other and share what we know. Without further ado, here's your newsletter!

Our February 13th Members’ Meeting was devoted to sharing tips and resources that can help us find the right shows your type of art and price range. Here’s a few points from that meeting, which is also available for viewing in its entirety by clicking this link February Members Meeting.

Which shows are right for me?

Every show has certain types of customers in mind and selects artists that target that audience. Is it a high-end art show or aimed at a lower price point? It could be a show, like the Roycroft Campus Shows, that covers a broad range of artful products from $10-20 up to pieces priced over a thousand dollars. You need to select shows that match your offerings.

All shows should have a social media presence that gives you the basic information about application and related fees. You really need to get some input from artists who have done those shows you’re interested in and, if possible, scout the show before applying. This should give you a good sense of fit and what will be required for booths or tents and your display quality. There is a Facebook Group called Art Fair Reviews where you can search shows and any feedback that’s been posted for them

Application Process

You’ll need photos for your application. They should be high quality with a simple background without distractions that focus on a single piece. Convey size in a brief description included with the photo. Shows may also ask for a booth picture.

Tent and Booth Set Up

For outdoor shows, wind and weather is a huge concern. Get a good tent with sides that zip up. To prevent the tent from blowing away, use stakes and a minimum of 40 lb. for each corner and secured to the frame not the legs. Even in good weather, have a plan to protect yourself and your products if the weather should turn bad.

Design your display using tables, panels and/or shelves. Displays should be at an appropriate height for your work, not so much stock or variety that it appears cluttered. Start with a plan and adjust as required with trial and error for exact placement of product mix re: price points, size, etc. Indoor shows may need drapes and lighting. Occasionally, you may need lights outdoors.

Here’s a useful article by ACG President Stacy Kist. It’s jewelry-specific but has a lot of good ideas for other media.

At the Show

Enjoy the show and your customers. It’s important to interact and engage the customers in friendly welcoming conversation. It’s special for a potential buyer to meet the artists, listen to their presentation and process. A positive interaction may not yield a sale but it will leave a good impression of you and the show. It’s meaningful to be an ambassador for the Arts and Craftsmen Guild and the Roycroft Campus.

Continuous Learning Process

Each show is different, but you’ll gain experience and new ideas from each one you do and the people and artists you’ll meet. Fellowship among artists may provide you with the best learnings available. No matter where you show, be proactive, introduce yourself to new folks and promote the Arts and Craftsmen Guild on the Historic Roycroft Campus.
